Putting down roots...

Rhizomes, I should say!

This week we finally got a frost. And with that frost came a desire in me to plant any and all bulbs, trees, hops, and the like that I could find. That way, I mused, the spring would be that much more exciting. I cut back the hop vines which had been in a autumn-like decline for some time. I then planted them on the northwestern edge of the back yard next to an impressive stand of blackberries I discovered (the hard way). Next spring I will be installing a 10-12' "T", complete with strings to the ground, for the hops to grow up.

If all goes well, we'll make quite a haul next year all around. We'll have hops, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. I'm thinking it sounds like the perfect recipe for some refreshing hefeweizens next summer. I vaguely recall Jessie saying something about making jam, but I'm sure she was joking.
